Turning on a PlayStation 4 system is a straightforward process, but new owners or infrequent users might wonder about the different ways to power up the console. Whether you prefer using the physical button on the hardware or the convenience of a wireless DualShock 4 controller, starting up your gaming session takes just a few seconds. Understanding these basic operation steps ensures your console boots up smoothly and ready for action.

Using the Power Button on the Console

The most direct way to start your PlayStation 4 is by pressing the physical power button located on the front of the device. On standard and Pro models, this button is situated in the center seam, while the Slim model features a dedicated power button near the disc slot. A single short press will trigger a light indicator, followed by a beep sound confirming the boot process has begun.

It is important to avoid holding the power button down for too long when turning on the system. Holding it for roughly seven seconds will force the console into Safe Mode, which is reserved for system troubleshooting. For normal startup, a quick light touch or press is all that is required to bring your home screen to life.

Powering On with the DualShock 4 Controller

You can also turn on your console wirelessly without leaving your seat by using a paired DualShock 4 controller. Simply press the oval PlayStation button located in the center of the controller between the two analog sticks. Once pressed, the light bar on the controller will flash blue as it attempts to establish a connection with the console.

When the connection is established, the PlayStation 4 console will light up, beep, and send a signal to your connected display monitor or television. If the controller flashes white or blue continuously without turning on the console, it may need to be re-paired using a USB charging cable connected directly to one of the front ports.

Setting Up HDMI Device Link for Instant Start

For an even more seamless experience, the PlayStation 4 features an HDMI Device Link setting that synchronizes your television and console. When enabled in your system settings menu, turning on your TV or switching to the PS4 HDMI input can automatically wake the console from standby mode. Conversely, turning on your controller can automatically power on your television and switch to the correct channel.

To activate this convenient setting, navigate to the Settings menu on your console dashboard, select System, and check the box for Enable HDMI Device Link. Keep in mind that your television must also support HDMI-CEC technology for this automatic power feature to function properly.

Waking the PS4 from Rest Mode

If your console is currently in Rest Mode—indicated by an orange light bar on the console housing—waking it up is faster than doing a cold boot. Pressing either the console power button or the PS button on a synced controller will instantly resume your system from its low-power state. This allows you to jump back into suspended games or access newly downloaded updates immediately.

Always make sure not to disconnect the power cable while the console is in Rest Mode or powering up. Unexpected power disruption during these active states can cause system file corruption or force the console to perform a storage check upon the next startup.
